The 5e releases were similarly staggered, with some free online PDFs serving the same purpose of that original insert. Later printings of the PHB, after the other two books were released, removed those pages. Back when D&D 3e came out in 2000, the Player’s Handbook came out before the Monster Manual and Dungeon Master’s Guide (which is why, thanks to the OGL, there was a 3rd party monster book available for sale the day the PHB was out but not the official MM.) The Player’s Handbook contained an insert that gave more information needed to run the game, including some sample monster stats.
